EDINBURG, Texas – Down 5-1 after five innings, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team scored nine unanswered runs to come from behind and beat the Southern Utah University Thunderbirds in game two of the 10
th annual Al Ogletree Classic, 10-5, in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Broncs (3-0) jumped on
Justin Neubauer (0-1) right away. With one out in the first,
Roger Bernal reached on an infield-single. After moving to second on a groundout, Bernal scored on a double by
Vincent Mejia to make it 1-0.
Neubauer cruised along for the next four innings, allowing only one more hit while going through the Broncs' batting order twice. In the mean time, the Thunderbirds (0-5) scored four runs in the second and one in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. In the sixth, however,
Derek Hagy and Bernal led off with singles.
Angel Ibanez followed with an RBI-triple into the right field corner. After a Mejia walk,
Chris Torres hit an RBI-single to knock out Neubauer.
Matt Nelson came in out of the bullpen and committed a throwing error after fielding a sacrifice bunt by
Brandon Roush to allow Mejia to score.
Jason Webb came up next and hit a sacrifice fly to give the Broncs a 6-5 lead.
That made a winner of
Colby McCasland (1-0), who struck out six in two and one-third innings of scoreless relief.
The Broncs added two runs in the seventh. Bernal and Ibanez led off with singles. Mejia followed with a grounder to third, but the throw to second was wild, allowing Bernal to score and Ibanez moved to third.
Mike McCarthy hit a sacrifice fly to make it 8-5.
Bernal tied his career-high in hits, going 4-for-5 with a career-high four runs scored and one RBI. Ibanez went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
The Broncs and Thunderbirds complete the Al Ogletree Classic with game three of this three-game series in approximately 30 minutes.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
