Day One Recap
STERLING, Illinois – University of Texas-Pan American indoor track & field runner
Andrew Lopez won the 800-meter run and
Alejandro Trevino won the triple jump while the Broncs men's and women's teams both finished fifth out of seven during the final day of the Great West Conference Championships on Sunday at the Westwood Fitness & Sports Center.
Lopez won with a time of 1:55.15. Trevino won with a distance of 45'07.75.
The men's team finished with a score of 70.00, 11 points behind Chicago State and 11.50 points behind North Dakota. Utah Valley won the championship with a score of 220.00 while Houston Baptist finished runner up with a score of 119.00.
The women's team finished with a score of 44.00. Utah Valley won the championship with a score of 240.00, North Dakota finished second at 119.00, Houston Baptist finished third with a 118.00 and Seattle came in fourth at 79.00.
Several Broncs came close to first place finishes during day two.
Sylvia Alboniga set a new school record by finishing second in the 60-meter hurdles finals with a time of 9.01, .05 seconds behind Utah Valley's
Jessica Lingwall. Alboniga set the previous two records, with a time of 9.04 in the trials on Saturday and a time of 9.06 in 2010.
Jasmine Davison finished third in the shot put with a distance of 41'05.00”, 0.25” behind Utah Valley's
Becca Hutton and 2'09.75” behind Chicago State's
Jaya Emerson.
Macario Zarate finished second in the 60-meter hurdles finals with a time of 8.37, .33 seconds behind Chicago State's
Kelvin White.
During day one of competition on Saturday, the Broncs' distance medley relay team of
Martin Casse,
Guillermo Martinez,
Sebastien Benavides and
Andrew Lopez took home a victory for the fourth-straight year, with a time of 10:25.00, 0.41 seconds ahead of Seattle University.
Also on day one,
Scott Bann finished in third in the men's weight throw with a distance of 54'06.50, fourth best all-time in program history.
Jesus Alvarez had a fifth place throw of 52'20.00, good for fifth-best in program history.
The Broncs kick off the outdoor track & field season on Saturday at the Border Olympics in Laredo.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
