ABILENE, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros outdoor track & field teams will begin their 2026 season this weekend at Abilene Christian's Wes Kittley Invitational at Elmer Gray Stadium. 
 
The meet will run Friday and Saturday. For UTRGV, Friday will see Matic Vidmar make his Vaqueros debut in javelin around 5:30 p.m. The only running event for UTRGV Friday will be the women's and men's 1,500-meter run, which starts at 8 p.m. Saturday will be full of action, starting with field events commencing at 12 p.m. The Vaqueros runners will get underway at 12:30 p.m. 
 
The meet will feature a mix of competition. Along with the Vaqueros and hosting ACU Wildcats, Tarleton State and a partial squad from Texas Tech join the field. Div. II title contender Angelo State will be present, along with Midwestern State, Hardin-Simmons, McMurry, Odessa College and Western Texas College. 
 
UTRGV isn't deploying its full charge, but will attack some disciplines heavily in the outdoor opening weekend. The hurdlers and long sprinters will be on full display. The women's distance quartet of N Vanee Anchike, Kailey Salazar, Lilliana Guerrero and Santa Maria alum Mia Picazo will compete in some shorter mileage races and come together for the 4x400-meter relay. It'll be the only relay the Vaqueros send out during Week 1. 
 
Along with Vidmar, freshmen Jazmine Newsome and JaDan Keiler will compete for the first time as collegiate student-athletes.
