EDINBURG, Texas –
Roger Bernal went 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored to lead the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team past the Texas A&M-University Corpus Christi Islanders 11-1 in game one of a doubleheader on Tuesday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The game ended in the bottom of the seventh due to the 10-run mercy rule. It is the fifth time the Broncs (10-1) have mercy-ruled an opponent this season.
Bernal, who entered the game seventh in the nation in hitting, raised his batting average to .511, tying Northern Colorado's
Adrian Schnek for the top mark.
This is the third time in program history that the Broncs have gotten off to a 10-1 start. It was previously done in 1978 and 1979. The 1979 team opened up a program record 20-1.
Bernal doubled with one out in the first, and one batter later, scored on a double by
Vincent Mejia to make it 1-0.
With
Derek Hagy at second and one out in the third, Bernal hit an RBI-triple and scored on an
Angel Ibanez groundout to make it 3-1.
In the fourth,
Mike McCarthy reached on an error and
Shane Klemcke doubled.
Riley Goulding followed with an RBI-double. Two outs later, Bernal hit an RBI-single to cap the inning with the Broncs ahead 6-1 and knock out Islanders (10-11) starter
Trevor Foss (0-3).
Goulding led off the sixth with a triple and
Andy Fortuna walked. Hagy and Bernal hit back-to-back RBI-singles to make it 9-1.
That made a winner of
Colby McCasland (2-0), who allowed one run on two hits while striking out five in seven innings of work.
The Broncs ended the game in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and no one out, Fortuna walked to force-in a run and Hagy hit a walk-off single.
The Islanders got their run in the second on a two-out RBI-single by
Dan Sciantarelli.
The Broncs and Islanders play game two of this doubleheader in approximately 30 minutes.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
