AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's outdoor track & field team finished the distance medley relay in a time of 9:55.00, beating the previous program record by more than 23 seconds on the final day of action at the 85
th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, hosted by the University of Texas, on Saturday at Mike A. Myers Track Stadium.
The previous school record was set last season, a time of 10:18.74.
The Broncs finished in 11
th out of 17 teams in the event.
Andrew Lopez started the DMR for the Broncs, running the first 1,200 meters in 2:57, keeping the Broncs near the top of the pack.
Edgar Moreno took over next, knocking out the next 400 meters in 49 seconds.
Sebastian Benavides ran the next two laps, covering 800 meters in 1:54.
The anchor was
Martin Casse, who ran the final 1,600 meters in 4:13. The Broncs almost took a top-10 finish, but UT-Arlington passed them in the final tenth of a second.
The Broncs return to action on Saturday, April 14, when they take part in the Trinity Alumni Classic, hosted by Trinity University.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
