Broncs Use 10-Run Seventh to Rally Past Fighting Sioux

EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team scored 10 runs in the seventh to come from behind to beat the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux 14-8 on Friday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
 
Down 7-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Broncs (17-7, 5-0 GWC) scored seven times before recording an out. In total, the Broncs sent 14 batters to the plate against four different pitchers, scoring 10 runs (nine earned) on nine hits, all of which were singles, while drawing three walks and hitting one sacrifice fly.
 
The Broncs loaded the bases against Fighting Sioux (2-21, 0-5 GWC) starter Andrew Thome, who proceeded to uses bases loaded walks to Vincent Mejia and Will Klausing to force in two runs. Alex Twenge (0-1) came in out of the bullpen and walked Mike McCarthy before allowing an RBI-single to Chris Torres. Brock Johnson was the next pitcher out of the bullpen, allowing RBI-singles to Brandon Roush and Iradier Hernandez and a two-run single to Derek Hagy. One out later, Kevin Auth came in and allowed a single to Angel Ibanez to re-load the bases. A passed ball scored a run and advanced all of the runners, setting up a Mejia sacrifice fly and a Klausing RBI-single to cap the inning with the Broncs up 13-7.
 
That made a winner of Zach Zouzalik (5-1), who allowed three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out two in two innings of relief.
 
Torres led the Broncs by going 4-for-4 with a walk, three runs scored and one RBI.
 
Roger Bernal went 1-for-5 with a walk to extend his hitting streak to 15 games. His batting average, tied for the NCAA lead at .465 entering the game, now stands at .452 (47-for-104).
 
Ibanez went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.
 
The Fighting Sioux scored in each of the first three innings.
 
Broncs starter Colby McCasland hit Kris Kwak to open the game. After moving to second base on a sacrifice bunt, Zack Trygstad hit an RBI-double to make it 1-0.
 
Sam Alt led off the second with a double and scored on a two-out error that allowed Riley Beck to reach. Beck stole second and scored on an RBI-single by Kwak to make it 3-0 Fighting Sioux.
 
Trygstad tripled in the third and a two-out error allowed him to score to make it 4-0.
 
The Broncs got on the board in the fourth. After loading the bases with one out, Roush hit a two-run single. Thome then walked Riley Goulding and Hagy to force-in a run to make it 4-3.
 
The Fighting Sioux got one back in the sixth when Alt led off with his second home run of the season. They added two more in the seventh on a two-run single by Alt, who finished the game a triple short of the cycle while going 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. He also drove in the game's final run in the ninth.
 
The game also featured three check presentations by sponsors of the 2012 Bronc Athletics International Tournament (B.A.I.T.).
 
In the top of the third, Joe Linderman presented the UTPA Department of Intercollegiate Athletics with a $17,500 check on behalf of Skanska.
 
In the top of the fourth, Gilbert Enriquez of Enriquez Enterprises presented a $4,500 check.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, Paul Trevino presented a $2,500 check on behalf or Rio Health Medical.
 
UTPA Director of Athletics Chris King was on hand to accept the checks. The UTPA Department of Intercollegiate Athletics thanks Skanska, Enriquez Enterprises and Rio Health Medical, as well as all of their B.A.I.T. sponsors, for their support.
 
The Broncs and Fighting Sioux play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Game one is scheduled to last seven innings while game two is scheduled to go the full nine. Gates open at 12:00 p.m.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
