Broncs Complete Sweep of Scorpions

EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team completed the three-game season sweep of the University of Texas at Brownsville Scorpions with a 9-2 victory on Tuesday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
 
The Broncs (21-7) are now 9-0 all-time against the Scorpions (28-21). The Broncs, winner of five in a row, are also 18-1 at home this season.
 
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second, the Broncs loaded the bases against Ryan Moye (0-2). Brandon Roush grounded into a double play to tie the game and then a passed ball allowed another run to score to give the Broncs the lead.
 
The Broncs loaded the bases again with two outs in the third. Chris Torres walked to force in a run and knock out Moye. Roush welcomed reliever Brody Chamberlain into the game with a two-run single to make it 5-1.
 
The Scorpions got one back in the top of the seventh, but the Broncs responded in the bottom of the inning with four runs. Roger Bernal and Mission-native Angel Ibanez led off with singles to extend their hitting streaks. Vincent Mejia walked to load the bases and Will Klausing hit a sacrifice fly. Torres followed with an RBI-double and Roush hit a two-run single to cap the inning.
 
Roush finished 2-for-4 with four RBI.
 
Bernal's hitting streak now stands at 18 games while Ibanez's is at 17 games.
 
That made a winner of Michael Zouzalik (2-0), who pitched a season-high six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out three.

During the game, Edna De Saro of Lone Star National Bank and Lance Morgan of Time Warner Cable presented UTPA Director of Athletics Chris King with checks for $5,000 each to support UTPA Athletics. The Broncs thank them for their support.

The Broncs kick-off a stretch of 13-straight road games when they travel to Utah Valley University for game one of a four-game series on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Both the Broncs and the Wolverines are 8-0 in Great West Conference play. They are also the top two hitting teams in the nation, with UVU at .333 and UTPA at .330.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
