EDINBURG, Texas -- The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team (20-7) goes for the three-game season sweep of the University of Texas at Brownsville Scorpions (28-20) on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Tickets are still available and can be purchased in-person at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium box office beginning at 6:00 p.m.

What You Need to Know
  • The Broncs are 8-0 all-time against the Scorpions, winning by an average of 6.1 runs per game. The Broncs' largest margin of victory was in their first meeting, 15-2 (4/8/09).
  • Not counted in that 8-0 record is the Broncs' 5-0 record against Texas Southmost College, with two wins in 1958 and three in 1963. TSC, which is currently in a partnership with UTB, was a junior college at the time.
  • Roger Bernal is third in the NCAA in hitting with a .449 batting average. He is on an 18-game hitting streak and has hits in 27-of-28 games. During the streak, Bernal is hitting .440 (33-for-75).
  • Angel Ibanez is currently on a 16-game hitting streak. He's hitting .400 (26-for-65) during that time.
  • The Broncs are second in the NCAA with a team batting average of .330.

Broncs vs. University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux (4/15/12)
  • The Broncs completed the four-game sweep of the Fighting Sioux with a 14-8 victory.
  • It was the Broncs' fourth season series sweep of the season.
  • The Broncs are off to their best-ever start in Great West Conferece play at 8-0.
  • The Broncs are now 17-1 at home.
  • The Broncs scored first for the first time in the series, but needed to come from behind for the fourth-straight game, scoring nine runs over the final two innings to win.
  • The Broncs pounded out 19 hits for the second time this season.
  • Derek Hagy recorded his fourth-straight multi-hit game, and third three-hit game of the series, going 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored. He went 11-for-17 (.647) with eight RBI and seven runs scored in four games.
  • Roger Bernal recorded his third four-hit game of the season, going 4-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Angel Ibanez doubled for the third-straight game after having only one double through the first 24 games of the season. He finished 2-for-6 with two RBI and one run scored.
  • Brandon Roush came up with a pinch-hit RBI-single in the seventh and is now 3-for-3 as a pinch-hitter this season.
  • Zach Zoualik recorded his sixth win out of the bullpen with 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball. Zouzalik is now tied for the conference lead in wins with Utah Valley starting pitcher Jeremy Gendlek.

The Series

Broncs @ University of Texas at Brownsville Scorpions (2/28/12)
  • The Broncs won in their first-ever visit to Scorpion Field, 5-3.
  • Making his first start since February, 20, 2011, Jonathan Sa pitched 6.1 innings, allowing one run on seven hits while racking up a career-high six strikeouts. Sa didn't allow a run until the seventh inning.
  • Zach Zouzalik recorded his second win of the year, striking out both batters he faced.
  • Edinburg-native Austin Casas struck out two in two hitless innings for his first save.

Broncs vs. University of Texas at Brownsville Scorpions (2/21/12)
  • The Broncs beat the Scorpions 13-1 in a game that was called after six and a half innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. 
  • Mike McCarthy hit a two-run home run in the second inning, matching his season total from last season. He finished 3-for-3 with four RBI.
  • In his Broncs debut, Derek Hagy went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI.
  • Jason Webb reached base in all four plate appearances, collecting a double, a triple and two walks while scoring a career-high three runs.
  • The Broncs used a different pitcher in each inning, the first six of whom did not allow a run. Michael Zouzalik, Zach Zouzalik and Jonathan Sa each pitched perfect innings from the fourth through sixth.
  • The Broncs opened the season at home for the third-straight year.

Next Up

The Broncs kick-off a stretch of 13-straight road games when they travel to Utah Valley University for game one of a four-game series on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Both the the Broncs and the Wolverines are 8-0 in Great West Conference play. They are also the top two hitting teams in the nation, with UVU at .333 and UTPA at .330.
