Broncs Take Game One of Doubleheader

EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team beat the New York Institute of Technology Bears 4-1 in game one of a doubleheader on Friday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
 
Roger Bernal went 1-for-4. His NCAA-leading batting average now stands at .477 (41-86).
 
After the Bears (2-17, 0-2 GWC) scratched across an unearned run against Bryan Maxwell (3-1) in the top of the first, the Broncs (14-6, 2-0 GWC) batted around to take the lead against Ryan Dillabough (0-4) in the bottom of the inning.
 
The first three Broncs reached to load the bases. With one out, Chris Torres and Will Klausing hit two-run doubles to make it 4-1 Broncs.
 
Maxwell and Dillabough settled down from there to engage in a pitching duel. Maxwell pitched six innings, striking out six while allowing four hits and four walks. Dillabough also pitched six innings, striking out six while allowing seven hits and two walks.
 
Palmview-native Guadalupe Barrera struck out one in a perfect seventh for his first save.
 
Game two of this doubleheader gets underway at approximately 5:32 p.m.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
