Hernandez Leads Broncs Past Bears in Game Two of Doubleheader

Box Score

EDINBURG, Texas – Mission-native and Sharyland High School-alum Iradier Hernandez hit his first-career home run at home as part of a three-RBI day to lead the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team past the New York Institute of Technology Bears 13-3 in game two of a doubleheader on Friday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The game ended in the bottom of the seventh when Will Klausing hit a two-run single to enact the 10-run mercy rule. This is the seventh time this season that the Broncs (15-6, 3-0 GWC) have won by virtue of the mercy rule.

Klausing finished 2-for-2 with two walks, three RBI and three runs scored.

Making his second start of the season and first since March 3, Hernandez jumped on the first pitch he saw and hit it over the 16-foot wall in left field to make it 3-0 Broncs in the second. It was Hernandez's second-career home run and first since April 24, 2010 at NJIT.

The Broncs' designated hitter finished 2-for-4, adding an RBI-single and a run during a three-run fifth inning.

The Broncs also scored four runs in the fourth, on two-run singles by Vincent Mejia and Riley Goulding, to beat Bears (2-18, 0-3 GWC) starter James Moussa (1-1).

Broncs starter Dusten Knight (2-1) was locked in from the very beginning, striking out three of the first five hitters he faced and allowing just one hit through the first four innings. The Bears scored three runs against Knight in the sixth, but only one of them was earned.

Knight pitched seven innings, striking out seven along the way.

Roger Bernal went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. His NCAA-leading batting average now stands at .478 (43-90).

The Broncs and Bears conclude this four-game series on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Gates open at 11:00 a.m.
