EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team completed the four-game sweep of the New York Institute of Technology Bears with a 5-4 victory on Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Broncs (16-6, 4-0 GWC) are now 13-0 at home this season.
The Broncs got on the board against Bears (2-19, 0-4 GWC) starter
James Bulva (0-3) right away. With two on and one out in the first,
Vincent Mejia hit a three-run home run into the Broncs bullpen beyond the left field wall to make it 3-0.
Mejia went 2-for-3 with a walk, four RBI and two runs scored.
Dylan Badura (2-1) scattered three hits through the first three innings, but with one out in the fourth, he issued a six-pitch walk to
Ali Rodriguez and an eight-pitch walk to
Dan Lackner.
Sebastian Grazziani followed with a two-run double.
Steve McNamara came up next and hit a grounder to short, but the throw sailed past first, allowing Grazziani to score to tie the game.
The Broncs took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth. Mission-native
Angel Ibanez led off with a single. Mejia followed with an RBI-double and
Will Klausing hit an RBI-single to make it 5-3.
That made a winner of Badura, who allowed four hits and two walks while striking out three in a career-high five innings of work.
The Bears got one back in the eighth against
Jonathan Sa and then loaded the bases with two outs, but Palmview-native
Guadalupe Barrera got
Nick Sebastian to ground into a fielder's choice to escape the threat.
Barrea followed that up with a scoreless ninth for his second save.
Roger Bernal, who entered the game hitting an NCAA-leading .478, went 1-for-4 with a double. His batting average now stands at .468 (44-for-94).
The Broncs went 7-for-32 as their batting average, which stood at an NCAA-best .332 entering the game, fell to .327 (239-for-731).
The Broncs return to action on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. when they host the University of Texas at San Antonio at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The Broncs beat the Roadrunners 18-13 in San Antonio on March 27.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
