Broncs Use Long Ball to Beat Shockers

Box Score

WICHITA, Kansas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team hit three home runs in the sixth inning to get past the Wichita State University Shockers 7-5 on Friday at Eck Stadium-Home of Tyler Field.

With the Broncs (3-7) up 3-1 after five innings, Will Klausing launched Kris Gardner's (1-1) first pitch of the sixth over the right field wall for his first-career home run. Not to be outdone, Alberto Morales followed with his first-career home run to knock out Gardner. Foster Vielock came in and retired the first two batters he faced, but Dillon Engelhart capped the inning with his first-career home run to make it 6-1.

That inning gave the Broncs' their first multi-home run game since hitting two at New Mexico State on March 23, 2012. It was their first three-home run game since hitting three at Prairie View A&M on April 26, 2009. It was the Broncs' first three-home run inning since before 2006.

The Shockers (7-5) started chipping away in the bottom of the inning as Casey Gillaspie homered to make it 6-2.

In the seventh, with two on and two out, Taylor Doggett hit an RBI-single to knock out Broncs starter Dylan Badura (1-2), and then Gillaspie hit an RBI-single off of Kyle Tokunaga to make it 6-4.

Badura pitched a career-high six and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks while striking out a career-high five.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Shockers put runners at second and third with one out. Luis Flores came in and struck out Tyler Barker. He then struck out Cody Bobbit, but the ball went to the backstop, allowing a run to score to make it 6-5.

The Broncs turned the momentum around in the ninth, however, as Alex Howe led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice, and scored on a single by Morales one out later.

Aaron Moore pitched a hitless ninth for his first save.

Eight of the nine Broncs in the starting lineup combined for 13 hits. Freshman PSJA High School alum Bryan Ramirez went 2-for-5 with a double and his first-career RBI while making his second-straight start, and first at both second base and in the leadoff spot. Howe, Morales, Engelhart and Shane Klemcke also had two hits each. Klemcke drove in two runs with a double in the second.

The Broncs and Shockers play game two of this three-game series on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
