Baseball Falls at Wichita State in Game One of Doubleheader

WICHITA, Kansas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the Wichita State University Shockers 8-1 in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at Eck Stadium-Home of Tyler Field.
 
The Broncs (3-8) struck right away against Shockers (8-5) starter Cale Elam (1-1). PSJA alum Bryan Ramirez drew a leadoff eight-pitch walk, move to second on a ground out, to third on a wild pitch and scored on an Alex Howe groundout to make it 1-0.
 
Elam settled down after that, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out eight in six innings.
The Shockers put two on with two out in the third against Broncs starter Dusten Knight (0-2). Taylor Doggett hit an RBI-single, and then, after a Casey Gillaspie walk loaded the bases, Tyler Baker walked to force in a run. Garrett Bayliff then capped the inning with a two-run single to make it 4-1.
 
The Shockers chased Knight in the fifth after Doggett led off with a single and Gillaspie hit an RBI-double to make it 5-1.
 
La Joya High School alum Guadalupe Barrera took over and pitched two scoreless innings before allowing three insurance runs over the final two innings.
 
Aaron LaBrie pitched three scoreless innings for his second save.
 
The Broncs and Shockers play game three of this three-game series in approximately 30 minutes.
