Baseball Splits Doubleheader at NYIT

SELDEN, New York – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team split a doubleheader with the New York Institute of Technology Bears, falling 1-0 in game one and winning 10-6 in game two on Sunday at Suffolk County Community College.
 
Alex Howe led the Broncs (12-15, 3-1 GWC) offensively, going 4-for-8 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored. PSJA alum Bryan Ramirez went 3-for-7 with a double, two RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.
 
Robert Loftus led the Bears (3-22, 1-3 GWC) by going 5-for-8 with an RBI and two runs scored out of the leadoff spot.
 
The Broncs and Bears were scoreless going into the bottom of the eighth of game one. With one out, Joshua Canabal singled and Preston Budziszewski (1-1), in his second inning of relief, plunked Nicholas Sebastian. One out later, Michael Fermin singled to right to knock in the game's lone run.
 
That made a winner of Steve Cotov (1-1), who pitched a perfect eighth. Matt Maier pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.
 
Luis Flores made his first start of the season for the Broncs, pitching five innings of four-hit baseball, striking out seven while walking one.
 
Tommy Cardona started for the Bears, striking out four in seven innings while allowing three hits and three walks.
 
The Broncs scored immediately against Ryan Dillabough (0-4) in game two. Ramirez led off with a single, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Jacob Huckabay.
 
With two outs in the second, Shane Klemcke singled and Andy Fortuna walked, setting up a two-run double by Ramirez to make it 3-0.
 
The Bears struck back against Dusten Knight in the third. With two outs, Loftus reached on an infield-single and Joe Daru hit an RBI-double to make it 3-1. The Bears went on to load the bases, but Knight struck out Canabal to escape the threat.
 
In the fourth, the Bears loaded the bases with two outs and a run already in. Ali Rodriguez doubled to left to score two, but Daru, who had been at first, was thrown out at the plate trying to score to end the inning with the Bears up just 4-3.
 
The Bears scored another run in the sixth against Knight, who went six innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits and three walks while striking out a career-high tying 10 batters.
 
The Broncs took the lead for good in the seventh, taking advantage of three errors to score five runs on three hits and one walk. Riley Goulding led off the inning by reaching on a dropped fly ball in right field. Klemcke followed with a walk and Fortuna reached on an infield-single to load the bases. One out later, Dillon Engelhart hit the ball on the ground to drive-in Goulding, but no out was record on the fielder's choice due to an error at second base, leaving the bases loaded. Howe followed with a two-run single and then Huckabay capped the inning with a two-run single to make it 8-3.
 
That made a winner of La Joya alum Guadalupe Barrera (1-1) who pitched two scoreless innings of relief.
 
The Broncs return home for the start of a four-game series against Chicago State University on Friday at 7 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
