EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and UTRGV Fraternity and Sorority Life are partnering up for the 2017-18 basketball seasons with the second annual Ultimate Greek Challenge (UGC).
The UGC is a friendly, attendance-based competition between fraternities and sororities on campus to support school pride and traditions at basketball home games.
"What I like about the Ultimate Greek Challenge is that it really boosts our school spirit and it creates more time for all of us to spend time together," Delta Zeta - Theta Omicron President Cathalina Osornia said. "Our members experience so much unity when attending home games."
The challenge beings Friday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. when the UTRGV men's basketball hosts Nicholls State at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
The winners of the UGC will be announced at the final home game when UTRGV men's basketball hosts New Mexico State on March 3 at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Points will be given on a game-by-game basis to each participating fraternity or sorority based on the attendance breakdown below:
10 percent of members sign-in at a game = 1 point
20 percent of members sign-in at a game = 2 points
30 percent of members sign-in at a game = 3 points
40 percent of members sign-in at a game = 4 points
50 percent of members sign-in at a game = 5 points
60 percent of members sign-in at a game = 10 points
The total number of points earned per organization will be tallied and divided by the total number of basketball games.
There will also be various bonus-point opportunities for fraternities and sororities to take advantage of throughout the season.
"Greek Life is looking forward to being one of the main support groups at basketball this season," Alpha Sigma Tau member Roxanna Flores said. "We're ready to show our pride!"
The fraternity or sorority with the highest attendance during the 2017-18 men's and women's basketball seasons will be declared the "Ultimate Greeks." Winners will earn a commemorative banner that will hang inside the UTRGV Fieldhouse throughout the 2018-19 basketball seasons after being unveiled at UTRGV Madness.
"This partnership is a perfect way to increase school morale and show our community that the UTRGV student body is united and supportive of our amazing university," UTRGV Student Program Advisor for Fraternity and Sorority Life Kristen Garza said.
Tau Kappa Epsilon are the reigning 2017-18 Ultimate Greek Challenge Champions.
