CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team opened with four victories on the first day of the Contender CrossFit Islander Open on Friday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
UTRGV had someone advance in five of the six draws on the first day.
Play started in doubles where the team of freshman
George Hutchings and senior
Yehonatan Kaufman defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's duo of Thibault Frumholz and Kyohei Yamanaka 8-6 in Draw A.
Sophomores
Zane Kohrs and
Michael Loyd teamed up to pick up an 8-6 win over Laredo Community College's Martinez and Mere in Draw B.
In singles, Kaufman advanced in Draw B with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Laredo Community College's Manuel Pilotto. Kaufman advanced to face Okkie Kellerman for a spot in the Draw B championship match.
Kohrs picked up a victory over Incarnate Word's Nedim Ahmic in Draw C. Kohrs fell in the first set 6-7, before battling back with a 6-2 win in the second set and then closing out the victory with another 6-2 win. Kohrs will face Laredo Community College's Albert Mello for a spot in the championship.
Freshman
George Hutchings will also play for a spot in Draw D after receiving the first round bye as he faces Chad Nguyen in the semifinal round.
Play will continue on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
