RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is proud to announce that student-athletes, coaches, and staff completed 1,398 hours of community service while collecting more than 1,450 pounds of food donations during the fall semester.
As of Nov. 19, UTRGV ranked fifth in the NCAA Division I Team Works Challenge. The competition ran through Nov. 30 with final results expected to be released in late January. UTRGV was the only Texas and Western Athletic Conference (WAC) institution in the top 14. WAC opponent Stephen F. Austin was the next closest Texas and conference institution, ranking 15
th.
Throughout the fall, UTRGV served 12 community organizations, including the Special Olympics, the City of Edinburg, the Food Bank RGV, Edinburg Parks & Rec, the Edinburg Boys & Girls Club, and the Edinburg and McAllen school districts.
Overall, UTRGV Athletics is estimated to have made a $39,909 economic impact with its community service in the fall.
