HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) track & field teams beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi head-to-head for two victories in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, at Rice's J. Fred Duckett Twilight on Saturday at Wendel D. Ley Track & Holloway Field.
Student-athletes from UTRGV and Corpus Christi earned points in a 5-3-2-1 format, with the top two finishers from each team in each event scoring.
The women won 80-70 and the men won 89-55.
Graduate student
Desirea Buerge followed up last week's program-record 58.90-meter discus throw that got her into the U.S. Olympic Trials with a first-place throw of 57.51 meters, the second-best in program history. Buerge is now responsible for the top three discus throws and five of the top seven in program history.
Buerge followed that up with a 15.30-meter shot put, good for fourth place and tied for ninth in program history. Junior
Alexandrea Hurst finished third at 15.31 meters, the eighth-best in program history.
Graduate student
Paul May shattered the program record in the men's discus with a throw of 55.84 meters, surpassing his own record from 2018 by 3.54 meters. May now holds the top four spots in program history. Senior
Christian Hall-Gardner uncorked the 11
th-best throw in program history and second-best of his career, placing sixth at 48.95 meters.
May also PRed in the hammer throw with a fourth-place throw of 60.06 meters, the second-best in program history.
May rounded out the day with an 18.01-meter shot put, the second-best in program history and just 0.08 meters off the program record he set earlier this season, to finish second. May now holds the top four spots in the shot put. Graduate student and PSJA Memorial alum
Michael Gonzalez placed fifth with a throw of 16.57 meters, the seventh-best in program history.

Jermarrion Stewart broke the program record with a fourth-place time of 40.18 seconds. That squad has recorded the top four times in program history this season.
Hernandez followed that up by finishing fifth in the 400-meter dash with a PR time of 47.31, the fourth-best in program history.
Sophomore
Tamara Woodley PRed in the 400-meter dash, finishing second with a time of 54.28, the fourth-best in program history.
Sophomore
Mystique Brown PRed in the 200-meter dash, finishing seventh with a time of 24.39, tied for sixth-fastest in program history.
Junior
Abraham Chirchir placed third in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:32.71, the fifth-best in program history.

Max Carmona won the 800-meter race with a time of 1:51.26.
