RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Men's Basketball Head Coach Matt Figger announced on Wednesday that 6-0, 170-pound guard LaQuan Butler will return for his second season with the Vaqueros and fourth season of college basketball in 2021-22.
 
"I felt that staying here at UTRGV was the best decision for me because I believe that Coach Figger and the entire staff from top to bottom can help me become the player that I want to be," Butler said. "I'm all about improving and getting 1% better each day and he is pretty much the same way, so I'm all for it. I'm super excited to get back on the court and fight with my brothers and go get us a championship ring in honor of Coach Hill."
 
This past season, Butler averaged 9.1 points on 40.9% shooting, 1.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 steals in 18 games (15 starts). He reached double-figures in scoring six times, including two games of 20+ points. Butler led the Vaqueros in scoring three times and assists twice.
 
"LaQuan's been really receptive since I arrived," Figger said. "He can play both the one and the two. He can score in bunches. Defensively, he has the ability to be a really good stopper. He also brings a level of toughness that we're excited to have on our team."
 
Butler transferred to UTRGV from Southeastern Louisiana, where he averaged 5.5 points on 33.3% shooting, including 37.3% from behind the arc, plus 76.2% from the foul line in 17.2 minutes per game across 24 contests (12 starts) in 2019-20.
 
As a freshman in 2018-19, Butler played at Chipola College, averaging 5.8 points on 38.0% shooting, including 36.4% from behind the arc, plus 81.8% from the free throw line in 32 games (one start).
 
Originally from Benton Harbor, Mich., Butler attended high school in Texas, graduating from Lancaster High School in 2018.
