The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is looking back at some of the best moments throughout 2021-22 season every #ThrowbackThursday (#TBT) through August.
RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team found themselves in a tough field at the GCU Invitational but that didn't stop them from posting their best round of the season.
While the Vaqueros finished in 12
th out of 23 teams, they posted a three-round score of 863, which is tied for the ninth lowest three-round score in program history.
The Vaqueros opened with a first round 292 and improved each round after that as they carded a second round 286 and then a final round 285.
That week, the Vaqueros were led by sophomore
Taj Sutherland who finished tied for 10
th with a three-round score of 210, both of which are Sutherland's career bests. Sutherland used rounds of 70, 71, and 69 to post the Vaqueros' lowest three-round total of the season.
Freshman
Juan Luis de Bethencourt also posted a career best three-round score of 212 with rounds of 71, 70, and 71 as he finished tied for 21
st.
Sophomore
Leonardo Novella finished tied for 54
th with a three-round score of 217, sophomore
Sebastian Lundberg finished in 111
th with a three-round score of 230, and senior
Tennoshin Ogawa finished in 113
thwith a three-round score of 232.
The youth of the program really showed a glimpse of the future at the GCU Invitational.
