Adkins Breaks Own Program Record as Indoor Track & Field Sets 18 PRs at Jarvis Scott Open

LUBBOCK – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) freshman Symoria Adkins broke her own school record in the women's 60-meter hurdles on Friday during Day One of the Jarvis Scott Open in Lubbock, running 8.62 (adj.) in the finals to earn a third-place finish and headline a strong day for the Vaqueros indoor track & field team.

This is the second consecutive meet in which Adkins set a school record. Junior Uxia Pereira finished sixth in the women's 60-meter hurdles final. Adkins and Pereira entered the record books with their performances in both rounds of competition Friday.

Adkins was one of four UTRGV student-athletes to earn a top-three finish and notched one of 18 personal records achieved by the Vaqueros.

Graduate student Marlene Gutierrez got the day started with a milestone achievement, hitting a personal best 19.02 meters in the women's weight throw to win gold in the A Section. This mark is Gutierrez's third entry into the program record books in three meets, ranking No. 3 all-time. Freshman Hannah Hilding finished third in the women's weight throw B Section.

Freshman Rayja'nae Pettit earned second in the women's long jump with a personal record jump of 5.81 meters – the 10th best mark in program history.

Graduate student Jada Hoffman and freshman Nayla Harris ran well in the women's 60-meter dash qualifying round to advance to the first round. Hoffman nearly tied the school record in her second race of the day, but due to a slight altitude adjustment, she tallied the second best time in program history at 7.56. Hoffman ran the fifth fastest time in program history at 7.62 (adj.) and Harris notched a PR in the qualifying round.

Senior Edinburg North alum Tristan Pena finished 13th in the men's 800-meter run, recording a personal best time of 1:54.08 which is ninth best in program history.

In the women's and men's 400-meter races, junior Aisha Gay and freshman Sam Johnson II led the Vaqueros with season-best performances to 12th and 21st, respectively. Gay's time of 55.90 is good for the third best time in women's program history and ranks third in the WAC this season.

UTRGV finishes competition at the Jarvis Scott Open on Saturday with field events starting at 10 a.m. and running events beginning at 11 a.m.

Udunna Competes Against The Best at Tyson Invitational
Freshman Jedidiah Udunna competed against student-athletes from several programs in the top 25 on Friday at Arkansas' Tyson Invitational.

Udunna placed 13th in the men's long jump with a mark of 6.88 meters. He finished 39th in the 60-meter dash qualifying round with a time of 7.05.
