Men's Golf Kicks Off Spring Season Monday at Border Olympics

LAREDO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team comes off winter break to open their spring season at the Border Olympics, hosted by Houston, starting on Monday at Laredo Country Club.
 
The 54-hole event will feature 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 holes on Tuesday with play starting at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start.
 
Laredo Country Club plays 7,204 yards and is a par 72.
 
The Competition
There will be a 17-team field that will feature UTRGV, host Houston, Baylor, Bowling Green, Coastal Carolina, Houston Christian, Illinois State, Lamar, Louisiana Tech, Miami (OH), Michigan, New Mexico State, Rice, Sam Houston, Louisiana-Monroe, Western Carolina, and Wright State.

Last Time Out
The Vaqueros closed out the fall season at the Bear Brawl, hosted by Baylor, where they finished in fifth place with a two-round score of 588. UTRGV posted rounds of 293 and 295. 
 
Sophomore Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque and freshman Henry Wang led the way for the Vaqueros as they finished tied for 16th with two-round scores of 147. Duque posted rounds of 76 and 71 while Wang posted rounds of 69 and 78. 
 
Junior Rhaasrikanesh Kanavathi finished tied for 23rd with a two-round score of 149 with rounds of 77 and 72. Juniors Javier Neira Garcia and Leonardo Novella finished tied for 25th with two-round scores of 150. Garcia posted rounds of 73 and 77 while Novella posted back-to-back rounds of 75. 
 
Last Year at Border Olympics
The Vaqueros didn't compete in last year's Border Olympics. 
 
Houston won the team title with a three-round team score of 12-under 852 after rounds of 284, 283, and 285. Louisiana Tech finished in second place with a three-round score of 867 and Lamar finished in third place with a three-round score of 870. 
 
Houston's Andrew Gibson and Alexander Frances tied for first place in the individual leader board with three-round scores of 209. Gibson posted rounds of 70, 69, and 70 while Frances posted rounds of 69, 70, and 70.
