LAREDO –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team bounced back with a 21-stroke improvement in the second round to close out the first day of the Border Olympics on Monday at Laredo Country Club.
The Vaqueros opened the first round with a team score of 314 but posted a 293 in the second round as they are currently in 14
th with five teams still needing to complete the second round. The 293 is the third score in the second round of the teams that have completed the second round.
Junior
Javier Neira Garcia led the Vaqueros on the first day as he sits tied for 32
nd with a two-round score of 148. Garcia posted a first round 77 before shaving off six strokes with a second round one-under par 71.
Juniors
Leonardo Novella and
Carlos Roldos are tied for 65
th with a two-round score of 153. Novella and Roldos each opened with rounds of 80 but both improved by seven strokes to post two-over 73 in the second.
Sophomore
Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque posted a two-round score of 155 and is tied for 72
nd after carding rounds of 79 and 76. Redshirt Sophomore
Taj Sutherland is tied for 78
th with a two-round score of 159 after posting rounds of 79 and 81.
Baylor holds the team lead after the first day with a two-round total of 563 with rounds of 283 and 280. Baylor's Johnny Keefer holds the individual lead with a two-round score of 139 with rounds of 70 and 69.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Tuesday for the final round starting at 8 a.m.
