KERRVILLE –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team used a second round 284 to climb from 10^th place to third place after the first day of the Big Texan on Monday at Riverhill Country Club. 
 
The Vaqueros, who opened with a first round 296, finished with a two-round total of 580 and sit just four strokes back of Midland College and Southeastern Louisiana for first place. UTRGV's 284 was the tournament's best second round score and is their best single round of the season.
 
Junior Javier Neira Garcia led the way for the Vaqueros with a two-round total of 143 and is tied for 11^th place while sitting just four shots off the lead. Garcia opened with a first-round 74 but improved with a three-under par 69, which was the tournament's best second round score.
 
Sophomore Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque is tied for 20^th with a two-round total of 145 as he opened with a first round 75 but rebounded in the second with a two-under 70. Freshman Henry Wang is tied for 25^th with a two-round total of 146 after back-to-back rounds of one-over par 73. 
 
Redshirt sophomore Taj Sutherland and junior Leonardo Novella are tied for 29^th with two-round totals of 147. Sutherland posted rounds of 74 and 73 while Novella posted rounds of 75 and 72. Junior Carlos Roldos, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 40^th with a two-round total of 149 with rounds of 73 and 76. 
 
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Tuesday for the final round with the first group starting at 7:45 a.m.
