BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's golf team is set to compete at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championship starting on Friday at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
The 54-hole event will run from Friday to Sunday and will feature 18 holes each day.
Boulder Creek Golf Club plays 7,482 yards and is a par 72.
The Competition
There will be a 13-team field that will include UTRGV, Abilene Christian, California Baptist, Grand Canyon, New Mexico State, Sam Houston, Seattle U, Southern Utah, Stephen F. Austin, Tarleton, UT Arlington, Utah Tech, and Utah Valley.
Starting Lineup
Last Time Out
The Vaqueros closed out the regular season at the Huntsville Toyota Bearkat Invitational where they finished in eighth place.
UTRGV finished with a three-round score of 888 after posting rounds of 284, 304, and 300.
Henry Wang led the way for the Vaqueros as he finished tied for 20
th with a three-round score of 218 with rounds of four-under 68, 75 and 75.
Javier Neira Garcia finished tied for 41
st with a three-round score of 223 after carding rounds of 72, 73, and 78.
Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque finished tied for 46
th with a three-round score pf 225 with rounds of three-under 69, 79, and 77.
Leonardo Novella finished tied for 60
th with a three-round score of 228 after posting rounds of 78, 79, and 71 and
Taj Sutherland finished tied for 66
th with a three-round score of 229 with rounds of 75, 77, and 77.
Last Year at the WAC Championship
The Vaqueros finished in eighth place at last year's WAC Championship with a three-round score of 888.
The Vaqueros posted rounds of 293, 295, and 300 as they finished ahead of Stephen F. Austin and Chicago State.
Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque lead the way as he finished in 19
th with a three-round score of 218 with rounds of 71, 70, and 77.
Sebastian Lundberg and
Tennoshin Ogawa finished tied for 33
rd with three-round scores of 223. Lundberg posted rounds of 77, 72, and 74 while Ogawa turned in rounds of 72, 76, and 75.
Taj Sutherland finished tied for 36
th with a three-round score of 224 after posting rounds of 73, 77, and 74 and
Leonardo Novella finished in 49
th with a three-round score of 234 after rounds of 77, 77, and 80.
Abilene Christian won the team championship with a three-round score of 857 with rounds of. 291, 278, and 288. Seattle U's Nathan Cogswell took home the individual championship with a three-round score of 207.
Looking Back at the Spring
The Vaqueros recorded their first win since the 2021 spring season when they won the Big Texan at Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville.
The Vaqueros posted their best three-round total at the Big Texan where they finished with a three-round score of 873. The Vaqueros posted a season-best tying 284 in the second round of the Big Texan and then also posted a 284 in the first round of the Huntsville Toyota Bearkat Invitational.
Javier Neira Garcia leads the Vaqueros this spring with a 72.9 stroke average and posted UTRGV's best three-round score of the spring with a 211 at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational where he also posted UTRGV's lowest single round score of 67 in the first round.
