RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that junior Javier Neira Garcia, of the men's golf team, is the Killers Golf UTRGV Student-Athlete of the Week.
 
Garcia helped the Vaqueros win the Big Texan last week at Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville by finishing in ninth place. It was Garcia's third top-10 finish in 2022-23 and the second of the spring. 
 
Garcia posted a three-round score of 216 after turning in a first round 74, a second round three-under 69, and a final round 73. Garcia helped clinch the win for the Vaqueros with a birdie on the 18^th hole as UTRGV and Southeastern Louisiana were neck-and-neck heading into the final hole.
 
This season, Garcia leads the Vaqueros with a 73.0 stroke average to go along with his three-top 10 finishes. He has recorded two rounds in the 60's and 11 rounds under par, which leads the team. 
 
The Vaqueros are back in action this week at the Huntsville Toyota Walden Bearkat Invitational at Walden on Lake Conroe Golf Course in Montgomery.
