RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Tuesday that the women's soccer team will open their 18-match 2023 schedule on August 18 against Southeastern Louisiana at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
"We are excited about opening weekend with Southeastern Louisiana coming here," UTRGV head coach
Mark Foster said. "That will be a tough game on opening night and then we have Corpus on the second night. There are some fun games to look forward to but surely there are no easy ones in their either."
Following the opener against Southeastern Louisiana, the Vaqueros will host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Aug. 20 as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Community Credit Union.
The Vaqueros will then hit the road for three-straight as they visit Incarnate Word on Aug. 24, Houston Christian on Aug. 27, and Texas on Aug. 31 before coming back home for Senior Day on Sept. 3 against Concordia.
UTRGV closes out their non-conference schedule with three more road matches when they visit Prairie View A&M on Sept. 8, North Texas on Sept. 10, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sept. 14.
The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) slate will feature nine matches leading up to the WAC Tournament, which will be hosted at California Baptist University from Oct. 29-Nov. 4 with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
"The WAC keeps getting better every year and that's what you want to be a part of," Foster said. "You want to be part of a league that keeps growing. I believe the league was ranked 12
th out of the 32 leagues so it's the type of league I want to involved in. Our players want to test themselves against the best and hopefully the work we put in in the spring to go along with recruiting and the girls working hard this summer will hopefully show up in WAC play this year."
The Vaqueros open WAC play at home on Sept. 21 when they host Abilene Christian followed by Tarleton on Sept. 24. The Vaqueros will also welcome Southern Utah on Oct. 5, Utah Tech on Oct. 8, and Stephen F. Austin in the regular season finale on Oct. 22.
UTRGV will be on the road to face Seattle U on Sept. 28, Utah Valley on Sept. 30, Grand Canyon on Oct. 12, and California Baptist on Oct. 15.
The NCAA Tournament will run start on November 10 at regional sites and wrap up with the College Cup from December 1-3 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina.
