RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday the hiring of Gordon Thomas Jr., who served as director of football operations at Nebraska in 2023, as assistant athletic director for annual fund.
 
In his most recent role, Thomas worked closely with the Husker Athletic Fund staff to engage donors and supporters of the athletic department, coordinated day-to-day operations and all team travel for the football program, served as a liaison between football and all other athletic departments, and directed the Matt Rhule Football Camps.
 
"We're thrilled to welcome Gordon, Quadira and their family to the Valley," senior associate athletic director for advancement and administration Derek Schramm said. "Gordon possesses a great work ethic, an eagerness to learn, and a terrific personality that is going to suit him well as he transitions into a development role here with us at UTRGV. Gordon's experience leading the daily operations at some of the top football programs in the country will bring a great level of organization, detailed planning, and operational excellence that will be extremely valuable as we continue to grow our fundraising efforts."
 
Prior to his time at Nebraska, Thomas had stops at LSU, Georgia Tech, Southern California, and Temple in football operations, player development, and recruiting roles. 
 
"First, I must thank vice president and director of athletics Chasse Conque and senior associate athletic director for advancement and administration Derek Schramm for allowing me the opportunity to join the organization," Thomas said. "My family and I are excited to join UTRGV and continue to push forward the success that athletics and the university have already begun. We have a unique opportunity to create a legacy at UTRGV and I am honored to be a part of it."
 
Thomas earned his Master of Science in Sports Administration from Ohio in 2023 and a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Temple in 2018. The Philadelphia native is joined in the Valley by his wife Quadira, and their son, Gordon Thomas lll.
