MONTERREY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team is in first place and 16-under par through 27 holes of the Monterrey Collegiate Classic on Friday at Club Campestre.
 
The Monterrey Collegiate Classic features a unique format where teams play 27 holes each day and the Vaqueros found their groove on the first day. UTRGV opened with an eight-under 280 in the first round on Friday and through nine holes in the second round are already eight-under for a 27-hole score of 416, which is seven strokes lower than VCU and Richmond who are in second place. 
 
The Vaqueros wrapped up the first day with four in the top 12, including juniors Esteban Gonzalez and Rodolphe Cicala, who are tied for fifth place just two shots off the lead, held by Richmond's Quin Polin. 
 
Gonzalez carded a first round five-under 67 and is even-par through nine holes of the second round while Cicala turned in a first round three-under par 69 and is two-under in the second round. 
 
Freshman Jorge Martin Sampedro and junior Emilio Gil Leyva are tied for 12^th after both posted opening rounds of even-par 72 and are both three-under through nine holes in the second round. 
 
Senior Arthit Kruaprayong is tied for 31^st after carding a first round even par 72 and is one-over par in the second round. Freshman Brock Porter, who is playing as an individual is tied for 61^st after posting a first round 78 and is one-over through nine holes in the second round. 
 
The Vaqueros will be back on the course tomorrow for the final 27 holes starting with the first group teeing off at 12:50 p.m.
