RIO GRANDE VALLEY – Junior
Emilio Gil Leyva of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team is set to compete at the World Wide Technology (WWT) Championship, a Professional Golf Association (PGA) event in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, starting on Thursday at El Cardonal at Diamante.
"I am so excited to play with the best," Leyva said. "I think it's going to be really cool, and I am a bit nervous but excited as well. I just want to stay calm and play golf. I want to have fun and learn and take in this great opportunity that I have."
Leyva will tee off at 8:09 a.m. and will play with professionals in Taylor Dickson and Mason Andersen. The trio will play together on Friday as well with their tee time moving to 12:44 p.m. The WWT Championship will air on The Golf Channel on Thursday and Friday
The field will feature 120 golfers vying for the WWT Championship, including veterans
Matt Kuchar,
Francesco Molinari,
Brandt Snedeker, and
Camilo Villegas.
Leyva qualified for the WWT Championship after winning the 27-hole Clasificatorio Mexicano with a score of 5-under in October.
Leyva enters his third season with the Vaqueros and is posting a 72.8 stroke average through six rounds this fall.
