Marburger Named Walter Payton Award Finalist

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – Stats Perform announced on Tuesday that senior quarterback Eddie Lee Marburger of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) football team is a finalist for the 2025 Walter Payton Award, which honors the FCS offensive player of the year.
 
Marburger is among 30 finalists nationwide, including 16 quarterbacks, and the only one from the Southland Conference.
 
The Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year, an all-conference first team quarterback, a National Offensive Player of the Week Honorable Mention and Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 27 and the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week Honorable Mention on Sept. 1, Marburger started all 12 games for the Vaqueros, going 199-for-305 (65.2%) for 2,780 yards and 31 touchdowns in the air while averaging 231.7 yards per game and 13.97 yards per completion. He also rushed for 308 yards on 79 carries, an average of 3.9 yards per carry and 25.7 yards per game. Marburger scored four rushing touchdowns. In total, Marburger recorded 3,088 yards of total offense, an average of 257.3 yards per game.
 
Marburger leads the Southland in nine offensive categories, ranking third in the FCS in passing touchdowns (31), fourth in passing efficiency (170.8), fifth in points responsible four (210), sixth in points responsible for per game (17.5), ninth in passing yards per completion (13.97) and yards per pass attempt (9.11), 14th in passing yards (2,780), and 18th in passing yards per game (231.7) and total yards per game (257.3). He also ranks 31st in the FCS and third in the Southland in completion percentage (65.2%) and 40th in the FCS and second in the Southland in completions per game (16.58).
 
Walter Payton Award
 
The Walter Payton Award, in its 39th season and affectionately known as the Heisman of the FCS, is named for legendary running back Walter Payton, who starred at Jackson State as part of his Hall of Fame career. Past recipients include Steve McNair, Tony Romo, Brian Westbrook, Jimmy Garoppolo, Cooper Kupp, Taylor Heinicke, and Trey Lance.
 
All 13 FCS conferences are represented by a finalist. The winner, to be selected by a national voting panel, will be announced at the Stats Perform FCS National Awards Show on Jan. 3 in Nashville, Tenn.
 
Also to be presented are the Buck Buchanan Award (FCS Defensive Player of the Year), Jerry Rice Award (FCS Freshman of the Year), Eddie Robinson Award (FCS Coach of the Year), HBCU National Player of the Year, and Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
