RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's golf team showed glimpses of their potential throughout the 2025 spring season.
The Vaqueros had five underclassmen on their roster this past season and they were a constant in the starting lineups throughout the spring. Three of those underclassmen,
Natalia Rodriguez,
Preston Saiz, and
Kieli Saenz, played in at least five of the six spring tournaments and were a big reason why the Vaqueros improved by four strokes in their team scoring average from the previous season.
Rodriguez led the way for the Vaqueros as she played in all six events in the spring and finished with a 76.8 scoring average. Rodriguez finished with five top-20 finishes with her best finish coming at the Southland Conference Championships, where she finished in seventh place.
Rodriguez earned UTRGV's first all-conference honor since the Melissa Bernal earned All-WAC honors in 2013-14 season as she was named to the All-SLC First Team.
Saenz played in five tournaments in the spring and finished her first collegiate season with a 79.3 scoring average. She helped the Vaqueros post their best finish since 2023 when they placed second at the Islander Classic and also added a seventh place finish at the Riverbend Intercollegiate.
Saenz finished tied for second place at Corpus Christi Country Club posting the team's best finish among two other top-10 finishes. Saenz finished with a season-best three-round score of 224 after posting rounds of 76, 74, and 74.
Saiz played in five spring tournament and finished with a 78.5 scoring average while posting a pair of top-20 finishes, including an 11
th place finish at the SLC Championships.
While the Vaqueros showed their potential on the course, they also took care of business in the classroom as well. The women's golf program led the department with a 3.74 GPA as they had 100% of their roster earn AD Honor Roll and SLC Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Rodriguez also added SLC All-Academic honors and College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honors.
The Vaqueros did some good things on and off the course this past spring and with most of the underclassmen returning, they are poised for another step forward heading into 2025-26.
