LUBBOCK – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's golf team battled on the first day of The Red Raider Invitational to post a 21-shot improvement from the first to the second round on Tuesday at The Rawls Course.  
 
The Vaqueros opened with a first round 323 but answered back with a second round 302 as they sit in 15^th with a three-round score of 625. 
 
Junior Preston Saiz led the Vaqueros on the first day as she sits tied for 34^th with a two-round total of 151. Saiz carded an opening round 77 before improving in the second round with a two-over par 74. 
 
Junior Natalia Rodriguez is tied for 49^th with a two-round total of 154 after posting a first round 80 and then improving by six strokes with a second round 74. Sophomore Miriam Barcalova is tied for 71^st with a two-round total of 160 after posting a first round 84 and improving with a second round 76. 
 
Senior Cristina Galban and sophomore Pitchayapa Pungpho are tied for 73^rd with two-round totals of 161. Both Galban and Pungpho opened with a first round 83 and improved by five shots in the second round with a 78. 
 
Texas Tech holds the team lead after the first two rounds with a two-round total of 581 after rounds of 282 and 289. New Mexico's Ava Cepeda and UTSA's Lauren Rios share the individual lead after a two-round total of 141. 
 
The Vaqueros will be back on the course on Wednesday for the final round starting at 8:15 a.m.
