HOUSTON – Senior
Barbara Martinez and junior
Hitakamya Narwal shined for the Vaqueros, teaming up for a doubles win and earning singles wins on courts one and two, respectively, in The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis program's 4-3 loss to New Mexico (UNM) Friday.
UTRGV opened the afternoon with a dominant 6-2 win on court one during the doubles session. Martinez and Narwal showed promise in their first match together, defeating UNM twins
Vianica and
Vivica Corley. UNM took the doubles point with wins on courts two and three.
In singles play, Martinez dominated on court one with a 6-1, 6-3 straight-sets win over
Bente Vandeputte to knot the team score at 1. UNM took the lead with a straight-sets win on court six.
Shortly after, on court five, the Vaqueros picked up another straight-sets win as sophomore
Luna Buijtenhuijs scraped out a tight 7-5 first set win against
Leo Malazdra. Buijtenhuijs capitalized on early opportunities in the second to win the set 6-3.
The Vaqueros took the lead when Narwal earned a gritty, three set win on court two. Narwal dominated in the first, picking up the set with a swift 6-2 win. Vianca Corley battled back to win the second 7-6 (7:3) to set up the deciding third set. In the third, Narwal was able to break Corley's serve and serve out the match, winning 6-4.
The Lobos clinched the match, winning competitive, three-set matches on courts three and four.
The Vaqueros will return to the Barbara Wallce Winston Tennis Facility Saturday for a road match against Houston starting at 2:30 p.m. Fans can follow along through
