RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis rolled the Nicholls (NICH) Colonels, 5-2, in a Southland Conference (SLC) match Monday at Orville Cox Tennis Center.
In doubles, UTRGV (5-13, 3-4 SLC) rallied to take the point, winning on courts two and three. On court two, juniors
Rhea Makesar and
Hitakamya Narwal picked up their second win of the homestand, defeating
Amalie Grube Andersen and
Blanca Losada 6-2.
On court three, sophomore
Luna Buijtenhuijs and senior
Valentina Urraco picked up their second-straight win, defeating
Julia Bordiginon and
Jada Iverson 6-3. Buijtenhuijs and Urraco leapt out to a huge 5-0 lead before surrendering the next three games. Sitting at 5-3, deuce point, Buijtenhuijs and Urraco outslasted Bordiginon and Iverson to secure the doubles point for UTRGV.
In singles play, senior
Barbara Martinez battled to win a tight first set. Trailing 3-2, Martinez broke the serve of
Paulina Villegas to knot the match at 3-3. The pair traded games until Martinez led 5-4 where she once again broke Villegas' serve to secure a 6-4 first set win. Martinez rolled in the second set, winning 6-1 to take the match and give UTRGV a 2-0 lead.
Buijtenhuijs was flawless in the first set on court three, jumping out to a huge 6-0 win in the first before entering a more competitive second set. Buijtenhuijs broke early to take a 1-0 lead and pushed it to 2-0 before trading games with Losada. Up 4-3 in the set, Buijtenhuijs broke through once again to take a 5-3 lead and served out the match to win 6-3.
Two minutes later, Makesar wrapped up a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win on court five over Andersen to clinch the match for UTRGV. Makesar dropped her first game of the match at 3-1 before winning the next three to take the first set 6-1. In the second, Makesar and Andersen were knotted at 1-1 before Makesar rolled to win five-straight and take the match.
Mere seconds later, Narwal sealed her 6-0, 6-1 win on court four to push the UTRGV lead to 5-0. Narwal surrendered her first and only game of the match at 1-1 in the second set before rattling off five straight games to win her match.
UTRGV will head out for their final conference road swing as they visit Southeastern on Saturday and McNeese on Monday.
