RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that freshman
Jorge Martin Sampedro of the men's golf team, is the UTRGV Student-Athlete of the Week.
Sampedro and the Vaqueros have cultivated a lot of energy and hype around the Rio Grande Valley, and Sampedro delivered at the NCAA Bryan Regional last week.
Sampedro, the 2026 Southland Conference Player and Freshman of the Year, finished in 10
th place to qualify for the NCAA National Tournament. His three-round score of 208 earned him the automatic bid as the top individual not part of the five qualifying teams.
Throughout the week, Sampedro recorded nine birdies and just one bogey. He finished ahead of 12 golfers ranked inside the top-100 in the Scoreboard rankings, including No. 7 Williams Sides of SMU.
Sampedro will head to the Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif. for the NCAA National Tournament which will run from May 29-June 3.
