USAF, Colo. – The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) announced on Tuesday that The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team has earned eight All-WAC awards, including seniors
Kyle Edwards and
Guillermo Martinez being named to the All-WAC First Team and seniors
Arthur Rogers and
Andy Riosand junior
William Akiobeing named to the All-WAC Second Team, as voted on by the league's coaches.
Additionally, freshman
Lukas Moser was named to the All-WAC Freshman Team and senior
Angel Lopez and freshman
Elyad Shojaei earned All-WAC Honorable Mention.
Edwards, who earned his second straight nod on the All-WAC First Team, led the team this season in goals (7), points (16), and shots (50). His seven goals are the eighth most in the WAC this season and his 16 points rank him ninth in the WAC.
Prior to the season, Edwards was named the WAC Preseason Player of the Year while also being named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List.
Martinez played and started in all 16 games for UTRGV this season as he anchored the back line of the defense. He helped UTRGV allow just 14 goals this season, which is the lowest allowed in the WAC.
Rogers, who was named team co-captain this season, also played in all 16 games as he finished second on the team in assists (5) and fourth on the team in points (5). Rogers' five assists are tied for the fourth most in the WAC this season.
Rios, who was also named team co-captain at the start of the season, started all 16 games at goal for UTRGV. He recorded eight shutouts, which is the most in a single season in program history, while making 50 saves and allowing just 14 goals for a WAC-best 0.84 goals against average.
Akio was second on the team in goals (6), points (13), and shots (31), while leading the team in shots on goal (20). Akio became the eighth player in program history to score at least three goals in a single match with a hat trick against Houston Baptist this season.
Moser played in 15 games as a freshman helping strengthen the defense alongside Martinez. Moser scored his first goal of his career at Central Florida while also recording his first-career assist against Air Force.
Lopez led the team with a career-high six assists and was third on the team in goals (3) and set a career-high in points (12) while playing in all 16 games this season. Lopez's six assists were the third most in the WAC.
Shoejaei played in all 16 games, starting in 13 of them, this season and was another member of the back line of the defense that helped set program records with an 0.84 goals against average and eight shutouts.
