McLennan Community College took home the First Annual Amigo Cup as the Highlassies defeated the UTPA women's golf program by a 7.5 to 4.5 score on Sunday (Apr. 22) at Los Lagos Golf Club.
The Highlassies held a 4-2 lead coming into the third and final round of the Amigo Cup where match play-style on the last 18 holes decided the contest.
In the number-one spot of the lineup, UTPA senior Natalie Haime (Carleton Place, Ontario, Canada/Perth and District Collegiate Institute) fell to Layla Ahmed, 5-and-4, while Ida Svenningson handed Elizabeth Rodriguez (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood H.S.) a 2-and-1 setback in the number-two spot.

"We played very hard today, and I was proud of the girls," said head women's golf coach Barb Odale. "We were either down or halved at the turn, and the girls battled back so there was a lot of positives today. We were on about a 300-pace today, and that's what we are going to need to shoot at the National Minorities. This was all about preparation for us heading into the National Minorities."
The UTPA women's golf team will be back in action at the National Minority College Golf Championships in Port St. Lucie, FL, on May 11th.
