GRAND FORKS, North Dakota- The University of Texas Pan American (UTPA) volleyball team dropped their second match in a row after a 3-0 loss at the hands of North Dakota Fighting Sioux Thursday night at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
The Broncs grabbed the early lead in the first set after an attack error by North Dakota. After the Fighting Sioux grabbed the lead, the Broncs regained the 4-3 lead after a bad set by North Dakota. The Fighting Sioux then went on a 9-3 run that gave them the 12-7 lead. A kill by
Krysta Freitas got UTPA within six but North Dakota closed out the set on an 8-2 run to grab the 25-13 first set victory.
The Fighting Sioux jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set. The Broncs cut the lead in half after a block by
Maria Kliefoth and
Krysta Freitas. North Dakota then answered with an 11-0 run to extend their lead 15-2. A kill by
Shauna Miller made the score 20-6 but the Fighting Sioux closed out the set with a 25-9 victory.
UTPA got on the board first in the third set with a 2-0 advantage. The Fighting Sioux then tied it at four on a kill by Lexi Robinson. Both teams went back-and-forth as North Dakota tied the set at six. The Fighting Sioux then went on an 8-3 run to push their lead to 14-9. The Broncs got within two at 16-14 after a kill by
Sarah Davis but North Dakota closed out the set and the match with the 25-17 victory.
Michelle McNamee and
Diara Reynolds led the Broncs with four kills.
Ijanae Holman returned to action after missing the last couple of matches and added three kills and two digs.
Juri Franzen paced the defense with 14 digs.
Devin Trevz had eight kills to lead the way for North Dakota while Ronni Munkeby added seven digs. Taylor Bohannon paced the defense with a game-high 15 digs. Nikki Husfeldt had 23 assists to set the offense.
The Broncs will remain on the road as they head to Orem, Utah to face off against Utah Valley on Saturday Oct. 29. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the UVU Activity Center.
