EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) volleyball team went five sets with New Jersey Institute of Technology but fell 3-2 (25-22, 19-25, 25-22, 22-25, 13-15) Thursday night at the UTPA Fieldhouse extending their losing streak to four matches.
The Broncs (7-21, 1-7 GWC) grabbed the first lead of the match after a kill by
Maria Kliefoth but NJIT quickly grabbed the lead on a Catherine Leung kill. The Highlanders pushed their lead up to 10-6 after a kill by Anna Mercado. The Broncs rallied with a 6-3 run to tie things at 13. Both teams went back and forth and they found themselves tied at 20. UTPA then went on a 5-2 run to close out the first set with a 25-22 win.
In the second set, the Broncs jumped out to a 7-2 lead after an attack error by NJIT (10-15, 2-6 GWC). The Highlanders answered with an 8-3 run that tied the set at 10. A kill by Renata Pandolfo gave NJIT the lead for good in the second set. A kill by Janet Snell pushed their lead to 17-12.
Ashten Landry cut the lead to 20-16 with a kill but the Highlanders took the second set 25-19.
The roles reversed in the third set as the Highlanders jumped out to the 7-3 lead. NJIT pushed their lead to 12-6 after another kill by Janet Snell. The Broncs cut into the lead with a kill by Kliefoth that made it 16-15 Highlanders. The Broncs tied things up at 20 after a kill by
Diara Reynolds. Reynolds gave the Broncs the third set victory with another kill making 25-22 Broncs.
The fourth set went back-and-forth as there were nine ties and three lead changes. The Broncs were the first to grab the lead after an attack error by NJIT but Leung tied things at four with a kill. NJIT grabbed the two point lead after another kill by Pandolfo but UTPA fought back to tie things at nine. Back-to-back kills by Asthen Landry gave the Broncs the 15-12 lead but errors by the Broncs allowed NJIT to tie things at 15. The Highlanders took the lead for good in the fourth set on a kill by Janet Snell and took the fourth set 25-22.
Three straight errors by the Broncs gave the Highlanders a 5-2 lead in the fifth and final set. Reynolds added another kill that got the Broncs within two at 6-4 but more errors gave NJIT the 8-4 lead. The Broncs responded with a 5-1 run to tie things at nine and then
Ijanae Holman gave UTPA the 10-9 lead with a kill. The Broncs held a 12-10 lead but NJIT closed out the match on a 5-1 run for the 15-13 set and match win.
Diara Reynolds led the way for the Broncs with 15 kills and also added eight digs.
Shauna Miller paced the offense with 38 assists while
Macey Singleton added 15 assists and 13 digs.
Juri Franzen led the defense with 28 digs and added to her team-high total with five service aces.
Renata Pandolfo and Janet Snell eached recorded 15 kills for NJIT. Anna Mercado paced the offense with 43 assists while Audrey Snell led the defense with 36 digs.
The Broncs will next play their final home match of the season on Saturday afternoon as they host Chicago State at noon.
