HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Texas-Pan American track and field team will travel to the campus of Rice University for the second time during the 2011 outdoor season on Saturday as they compete in the eighth annual J.Fred Duckett/Rice Twilight track and field meet. Running events begin at 6 p.m. with the running of the 4x100m relays. The women's hammer throw starts at noon with the men's hammer beginning at 1:30 p.m.
The Broncs are coming off an impressive showing during a three-day three meet road trip in California that saw several athletes achieve season best times and saw two school records broken.
Junior distance runner Lillian Lagat shattered the UTPA school record in the 10,000m at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays last weekend in California. Lagat finished ninth in the race with a time of 35:46.99. It is also now the top time in the Great West Conference this season.
Senior sprinter Jameson Strachan broke his own school record in the 400m dash also at the Mt SAC Relays. Strachan finished the race in fifth place with a time of 47.17.
This weekend the Broncs will look to rest a few athletes and give others an opportunity to show what they can do in their respective events.
"We are anticipating a tremendous meet at Rice tomorrow," UTPA Head Coach Dave Hartman said. "We will be resting some of our athletes for those who are road weary. It will be a great opportunity for our athletes as we move closer to the championship portion of the schedule."
Junior Abigail Garza will try to improve her distance in the javelin throw, where she currently sits third in the GWC performance list. Sophomore Samantha Villarreal will run the 200m for the ladies while fellow sophomore Desinty Schulze will compete in the 400m dash.
Freshman Luis Serrano will be an athlete to watch on the men's side as he competes in the 5000m distance run.
