FINAL RESULTS
SAN MARCOS, Texas- The University of Texas-Pan American track and field team wrapped up their 2011 outdoor regular season on Saturday afternoon after competing at the Bobcat Invitational meet on the campus of Texas State University. It was their final meet before the Great West Conference Championships in Orem, Utah in two weeks.
Senior sprinter
Jameson Strachan continues to improve meet-to-meet as he broke his own school record for the second time in the outdoor schedule in the 400m dash. Strachan shaved over five-tenths of a second off his Great West Conference leading time by crossing the finish at 46.60 seconds. Strachan is now ranked 33rd in the nation in the 400m dash. He finished in second place and holds a 1.53 second lead on Utah Valley's Skylar Burningham in the conference standings.
Also on the men's side, senior runner Wally Gonzales set a new personal best in the 800m with a time of 151.34 finishing fifth in the competition. Gonzales leads the Great West with the time set this weekend.
“Once again Jameson ran an amazing race which will put him in position to advance to the NCAA Championships,” UTPA Head Coach Dave Hartman said. “It was also great to see Wally notch a personal record as both he and Jameson are ready to conclude their careers in fine style.”
On the women's side, freshman
Jasmine Webb set a new personal best in the 200m dash with a time of 24.69 seconds. Webb finished fifth in her race and just behind HBU's Joslyn Cooper who set the GWC leading time of 24.66.
Judith Chumba finished sixth in the 800m run with a time of 2:18.25 which is her season high and puts her in the fifth spot in the GWC standings. Later in the day Chumba ran the 1500m and finished in third place with a time of 4:44.35.
Sara Hernandez set a new season high for her run in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:04.06.
“I was extremely pleased with the team's performance this afternoon,” Coach Hartman added. “It is refreshing to see our athletes peaking right before the championship season begins.”
The Broncs will travel to Orem, Utah for the Great West Conference Championships for their final meet of the season. The GWC Championships begin on May 12th on the campus of Utah Valley University and conclude on May 14th.
