LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana –
Andrew Lopez won the 800 meter run and
Mathew Kotut took the 3,000 meter run for the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs indoor track & field teams in the Jeff Davis/McNeese II Indoor Invitational on Friday at the McNeese State Recreation Complex.
Lopez ran in a time of 1:56.85, edging teammates
Martin Casse (2:00.38, second place),
Ryan McNutt (2:02.32, fourth place) and
Roland Cantu (2:02.49, sixth place).
Kotut finished with a time of 8:31.13.
On the women's side,
Judith Chumba finished second in the mile run with a time of 5:12.30. The men's team took the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh spots in the mile run as Lopez ran in 4:22.76, Casse ran in 4:23.71,
Colton Bosler ran in 4:30.08 and
Sebastien Benavides finished with a time of 4:31.70.
The women's team also advanced one runner to the 55 meter dash finals as
Jasmine Webb finished fourth with a time of 7.31.
The Broncs return to action on Friday and Saturday at the Tyson Invitational on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
