WALNUT, California – McAllen-native
Andrew Lopez set a new program record for the 800-meter run with a time of 1:50.06 to highlight day two of action for the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's and women's outdoor track & field teams at the 54
th annual Mt. SAC Relays at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
Lopez's mark bumps him up to 36
th on the NCAA West Region top marks list. The top 48 at the end of the year qualify for the NCAA Championships.
The record Lopez broke had been standing since 1971, when
Phily Acampong ran the 800-meters in 1:51.04.
Lopez finished first in his section and 16
th out of 84 overall. Wisconsin's
Austin Mudd won the event with a time of 1:47.68.
Sylvia Alboniga had a strong showing in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing second in her section and 19
th out of 38 overall with a time of 1:01.10. Arizona State's
Keia Pinnick won the event with a time of 57.34.
Alamo-native
Macario Zarate finished fifth in his section and 34
th out of 38 overall in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.11 seconds. MSU-Moorhead's
Laquone Robinson won the event with a time of 14.04.
The Broncs complete this three-meet west coast swing by competing in the Beach Invitational, hosted by Long Beach State, on Saturday.

The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
