AUSTIN, Texas – University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's outdoor track runner and McAllen-native Andy Lopez ran the 800-meter run in a time of 1:51.95 to finish 35th out of 48 overall in the first round of the NCAA Championships West Preliminary Round on Thursday at Mike A. Running in the third heat, Lopez finished fifth out of eight runners, falling 1.29 seconds short of a top-three finish, which would have allowed him to automatically qualify for the quarterfinals. The top three advance from each heat plus the best remaining nine times. Lopez fell 0.67 seconds short of clinching the 27th and final spot in the next round.
