Nicolas Platret won the Western Athletic Conference Championship after shooting a career-best five-under par 67 in the final round on Wednesday on the Gold Course at the Wigwam Golf Club.
Platret finished two strokes in front of New Mexico State's Brett Walker and Kansas City's Antoine Rozner with a three-round score of 211 (69,75,67), tied for the 11
th lowest mark in program history. His final round 67 is tied for the eighth lowest score in program history.
Platret is the first Bronc to qualify for an NCAA tournament since David Steffan did so in 1978. Platret will next compete in the NCAA Regional Tournament, which runs from May 14-16. Platret will learn which regional he is competing in during the selection show on May 4 from 6-10 a.m. on Golf Channel.
Platret opened with two straight birdies and then followed with two more birdies after he bogeyed the par-three third hole. He made the turn with a three-under 33. Platret opened his back nine with a pair of pars but answered with birdies on the 12
th and 14
th holes on his way to a two-under 34 on the back nine.
Senior
Chris Felix finished in 26
th with a three-round score of 228 (79,75,74) after shooting a final round two-over par 74. Junior
Ramon Ventura-Camp finished in 35
th after shooting a final round 82 for a three-round score of 237 (79,76,82). Junior and Sharyland High School alum
Peter Fox (81,82,79) and freshman
Ali Khazanbeik (83,84,75) tied for 37
th after posting three-round scores of 242.
As a team, the Broncs finished in sixth place with a three-round score of 911 (308,308,295), 21 strokes in front of Chicago State and just seven strokes behind fifth place Bakersfield. New Mexico State won the team championship with a three-round score of 861.
