COLLEGE STATION – Junior
Paul May won the shot put at the Ted Nelson Invitational on Friday to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's and women's track and field teams at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.
May hit a mark of 16.63 meters, which broke senior
Antonio Salinas' record of 16.15 meters. May finished ahead of Texas A&M's Gabriel Oladipo, who hit a mark of 16.62 meters. Salinas added a sixth place finish after a throw of 15.74 meters.
"It wasn't a bad day at all," UTRGV head coach
Darren Flowers said. "I thought our kids competed really well. The first meet coming out, you never know what to expect. I thought our kids laid it out there. They laid it out on the line. A lot of them started out the year where they finished last year indoors and that is a good sign."
"Paul obviously had a great day winning the shot put. I thought Yariel had a great day opening up in the 200 with a 21-9 and that is really promising to see that from him. Idatonye had a great day on the track running the 60 and the 200. We really had some decent performances all around. I think we are in a good place. We have to make sure to stay healthy and keep moving along."
