HOUSTON – Juniors Paul May and Idatonye Cheetham-West of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's and women's track & field teams set new program records in the men's shot put and the women's 60-meter dash to close out the Houston Invitational at the Yeoman Fieldhouse on Saturday.
 
May, who had set the program record of 16.63 meters two weeks ago at the Ted Nelson Invitational, reset the program record with a throw of 17.37 meters to win the event. 
 
Cheetham-West, who set the program record in the women's 60-meter dash with a time of 7.74 seconds yesterday, broke her own record as she crossed the finish line with a time of 7.66 seconds to finish in 10^th. Cheetham-West also tied a program record in the women's long jump with a leap of 5.88 meters as she finished in eighth place.
 
"It was a pretty decent weekend. It was fun," UTRGV head coach Darren Flowers said. "I thought our kids competed really hard. It started with that 60. Ine and Jo breaking the school record last night and then Ine coming back in the final and running really well. That puts her at the top of the conference, which is awesome. I though Paul competed really well. It was a huge PR for him and another school record. Overall, we competed really well and we just keep getting better. That was the theme for the week."
 
The men's and women's team also combined for 15 more top-10 finishes on Saturday. Senior Antonio Salinas posted a fifth-place finish in the men's shot put with a throw of 15.19 meters and sophomore Michael Gonzalez added an eighth-place finish after a throw of 14.78 meters, which set a new personal best.
 
Freshman Mauricio Campos posted a third-place finish in the men's high jump after clearing a personal best height of 1.95 meters while junior Anthony Magallon finished in eighth place after clearing a height of 1.90 meters.
 
On the track, sophomore Ricardo Mendoza won the men's 800-meter run after crossing the finish line with an indoor personal best time of 1:55.51. Freshman Mikel Escobar added a seventh-place finish with a time of 1:57.30.
 
"I was glad to see Ricky take charge in that 800 and come away with the victory there," Flowers said. "With the conversion to the banked track it's going to be a PR for him so we are just getting better every week."
 
Junior Isaac Arevalo finished in eighth place in the men's mile run with a time of 4:39.60. 
Sophomore Carlos Serna-Hernandez added a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter dash after posting a time of 51.63 seconds while junior Dimitris Levantinos finished in ninth place with a time of 52.61 seconds.
 
Senior Cristian Reyna posted a ninth-place finish in the men's 200-meter dash after crossing the finish line with a time of 23.75 seconds. Mendoza, Levantinos, Escobar and Serna-Hernandez teamed up to posted a fourth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay finishing with a time of 3:27.04.
 
On the women's side, junior Valerie King Mancha posted a sixth-place finish in the women's 400-meter dash after finishing with a time of 59.35 seconds while junior Destiny Rutherford finished in eighth place with a time of 1:00. Mancha also finished in seventh place in the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 25.96 seconds.
 
Mancha and Rutherford teamed up with Felicia Wills and Haley Allen to post a fifth place finish in the women's 4x400-meter relay after they finished with a time of 4:03.04.
 
UTRGV will be back in action from February 2-3 when they compete at the Texas Tech Open in Lubbock.
