HARLINGEN – For the second straight year, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team is set to compete at the International Tennis Federation Harlingen Futures event starting on Saturday at the H-E-B Tennis Center at Pendleton Park.
UTRGV will have to climb through the singles qualifying draw of 64 to make it to the main draw of 32 competitors. The qualifying draw will be played this weekend with the main draw starting on October 16 at Harlingen Country Club.
The Competition
Currently, freshmen
Samuel de Felipe Garcia,
Te Kani Williams, and
George Hutchings have been accepted into the qualifying draw. Others such as seniors
Yehonatan Kaufman and
Jake Davidson, juniors Clément Sarradin and
Mateo Schmit, and sophomores
Zane Kohrs and
Michael Loyd are currently alternates in case competitors don't show or drop out.
Professionals from all over the world will be competing at the Futures Tournament. Some of the countries being represented this weekend are Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Great Britain, India, Spain, Italy, Russia and the United States of America.
Last Year at ITF Futures
Yehonatan Kaufman and
Zane Kohrs both advanced to the second round of the qualifying singles draw.
Kaufman defeated Guillermo Alejandro Arrambide before falling to Jody Maginley 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the second round.
Kohrs moved on after Jared Thompkins left with an injury and then fell in the second round to Isaiah Strode.
Last Time Out
UTRGV won four flight championships at the Ron Wesbrooks Invitational last week at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
It was an all UTRGV final in doubles as the duo of
Yehonatan Kaufman and
George Hutchings faced off against Clément Sarradin and
Mateo Schmit. Kaufman and Hutchings came away with the doubles championship with a 7-6 win.
Kaufman wasn't done though as he defeated Lamar's Nicolas Mayr 4-6, 6-1, 11-9 in the Flight One championship.
Samuel de Felipe Garcia and
Zane Kohrs faced each other for the Flight Two championship as de Felipe Garcia won 6-3, 6-2.
Hutchings closed out the invitational with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Alcorn State's Ivan Matas to claim the championship in Flight Four.
International Flavor
There are nine student-athletes on the roster with seven countries represented. UTRGV has ties to the Argentina, England, France, Israel, New Zealand, Spain, and the United States.
Next Up
UTRGV be back in action on October 19 when it travels to Waco for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Tournament, hosted by Baylor.
