Track & Field Sets a Couple of Personal Records to Close Out Husky Classic

SEATTLE, Wash. – Sophomore Ricardo Mendoza and freshman Abraham Chirchir both set new personal records in the 800-meter run and the 3,000-meter run to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's and women's track & field teams on the final day of the Husky Classic at Dempsey Indoor.
 
Mendoza posted a time of 1:53.09 in the 800-meter run, which ranks second fastest in program history, as he finished in 14th place. Mendoza's time also currently ranks first in the Western Athletic Conference by more than three seconds.
 
Chirchir improved his personal best time in the 3,000-meter run after finishing with a time of 8:24.17, which ranks second fastest in program history. Chirchir finished in 76th out of 101 total runners. 
 
Jennifer Zapata posted a season best time of 10:04.99 in the women's 3,000-meter run finishing in third in the first heat. Her time also currently ranks third in the WAC. 
 
UTRGV will be off for a couple of weeks before heading to Nampa, Idaho for the WAC Indoor Championships from February 22-24.
